Paramedic Care: Trauma Emergencies, (5 Volume Set)

What The Profession has been waiting for, and needed
This 5 book series is the premier series on the market today. A very thorough foundation can be layed through this series of books.

There are already a number of good "paramedic textbooks" on the market today but they do lack the depth that is required to produce fully capable paramedics. A 1500 pg book just isn't enough to equip a paramedic with the necessary tools to provide advanced care in the field. it's also a pain to the students who have to buy numerous supplementary titles to make up for what's not in the book. This 5 book series does a lot to reduce the need for supplementary books, though the need is still there. With over 2700p. of information this series has to be the leading in the industry.

Every text has good intro and patient assessment areas but lack in the trauma/medical/special section. This book provides a great section on each of those titles. The cardiology section is much improved from past books. I found that much of the information in the medical and trauma sections are taken straight from AMLS and BTLS/PHTLS texts. It seems with every new version of book that the need for specific area books is reducing. I no longer even read my BTLS book because it's all covered in this series.

With clear art work and pictures it's easy to grasp the concept on many of the more difficult issues and topics. The wording used makes the books even more user friendly. The "key" items that are outlined in the margins are very helpful. I wasn't sure about how well the information would be layed out when I first read the outlines but it was actually beneficial to the learning process to cover things like advanced airway, early.

These books are not cheap, but they are the best on the market that I've seen. I am very happy with these 5 volumes. The industry has produces many excellent paramedics and that can only increase with books like these.

These books need to be seriously reviewed by paramedic instructors and institutions to see if they would be most beneficial to the students. Unlike many paramedic programs, since these sections are broken into 5 different books, you don't need to lug that 1000+ pg book to class every day for months or years.

I love these titles more than any other paramedic texts in my library.Somebody finally thought to break the books down into smaller sections. I was getting really strong lugging around massive books, but this is a nice relief. Thanks to Dr Bledsoe and other writers for making revolutionary texts like these to help aid the profession and raise the bar for all of us.

The fact that the package arrived at my Toronto home just 5 business days after I placed the order was an added bonus.

Excellent Foundation for Paramedicine!
An Excellent set that finally manages to cover all the topics needed for a firm foundation in Paramedicine. Explainations and visuals are insync with each other, alot of other Paramedic books out there are quite confusing. Topics covered are relative to the field and explained as straight forward as medicine can get. Paramedic books are often overwelling in presentation or they lack general knowledge and information needed. It was a organized wonderfully and easy to find selective topic. Great for old and new EMS personel. Many Paramedic courses have adopted this 5 volume set as their main text. Brady has provided an excellent informational and educational set of text books. My Basic book was not as easy as these are to take in. Brady created 5 great volumes; Introduction to adavance prehospital care, Patient assesment, Medical Emergencies, Trauma Emergencies and Special Considerations / Operations. They had an excellent staff to compose such high quality textbooks. You can't go wrong with this set of books!

Superb!
Once again, Bledsoe, et. al., have done a magnificent job. I am a working paramedic, and I purchased Paramedic Care to get up to speed on the new curriculum. I am impressed. I believe emergency physicians could even learn something from this series.

I am very pleased to see the expansion of the scope of practice for paramedics. The credibility of EMS professionals continues to grow - due in part to Bledsoe, et. al., and the many, many students who have learned from their textbooks.

Poetry Has Had Its Way With Me

I never thought I liked poetry until...
I was never really into poetry until a friend showed me this book. What can I say, I loved it. I never felt so much emotion as I did while reading about what these women had to say. It's so unique reading poetry by modern women. I hate to single out any of the poets, but I really liked Carolyn Phoenix's work. WOW! I hope to see more of her work in the future. This is a great book and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

Something for everyone
This book is a wonderful collection of original poetry. With the different styles and approaches of each writer you are bound to find one that you like! It is a small glimpse into the life and soul of each writer. They are not writing what people want to see, but what they feel inside. If you are a fan of poetry this is a must have. If you are not, this is also a good starter book to see what kind of style you'd prefer to read.

And now, poetry has had its way with me!
Six unique women of differing backgrounds and experience collaborate for the first time and present their commentary on the pleasures, adversities, and special moments that make up life. This collection of poetry shows that each of the women possesses literary talent, courage, and the willingness to defy convention. Their works are witty, acerbic, and profound. Like all good books, this one left me yearning for more pages to turn.

Arugula not required!
This book is heaven sent for those of us who aren't gourmet chefs and don't like having to buy enough food for a small army just to follow a dinner recipe. Good, fresh food without a lot of fuss...that's my kind of cookbook.

Plus, they don't use lots of fancy schmanzy ingredients...Another winning element of Quickies for Couples!

Finally!
As a young and newly married woman, I am so happy to have found a recipe book to feature beginner-level recipes that serve two people. So many other cookbooks assume that you are an expert-level cook! "Quickies" is a great book to help you feel more comfortable in the kitchen, and it will never intimidate you.

Not Only for Couples!
As a working mom, I never had time to make a nice meal for my family. Then I got Quickies for Couples! This cookbook is great because the recipes do make enough for my family or can be doubled if more is needed. They're delicious and so easy to prepare.
I also appreciate that the book includes several wonderful vegetarian & seafood dishes. This is a great buy for anyone!

A Quiet Center: A Woman's Guide to Resting in God's Presence

Must-read, Practical Advice for Stealing Quiet Moments
Ever feel like your life is just a series of connected, sometimes unrelated moments that leave you drained at the end of the day and wondering what you accomplished?

This easy-to-read inspirational volume is not a book full of oft-quoted truths that are easier said than lived by. It's principles were forged in the dailies of life and shared in simple, heartfelt, and straightforward encouragements that will leave you anxious to buy a copy for everyone you know.

At the end of each chapter there are guidelines for spending time alone with God. Susan acknowledges that we live through seasons in our lives where we are unable to spend as much time with the Lord as we would like. She has learned, and continues to learn the key to getting beyond this is the reality of God's presence in our lives.

A personal note...I had the opportunity to interview Susan for publication, so I obtained a copy of the book and began to read it. I couldn't put it down. And, it was just what I needed personally. I was in tears and had to gather my composure before I could call her to begin discussing the book. I would recommend it to any person, male or female, whose lifestyle is hurried, stressful or filled with anxious moments.

A Loud Review for A Quiet Center
All working mothers should read this. It doesn't take much time but offers time for peaceful thoughts. A must read for the busy mother.

A Quiet Center review
This is a great book and a short read. Perfect for busy women who need "time out." I encourage all working mothers to read it.

Resting Places: The Burial Sites of over 7,000 Famous Persons

Best Guide on this Subject
Before I heard of this book, I came into contact with its author through the website "Find a Grave." For 20 years, I had been searching fruitlessly for the gravesite of prohibition gangster Legs Diamond. My interest was one of historical curiosity (I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that Diamond had been a boyhood hero of mine), and I meant no disrespect to anyone, living or dead, but it was impossible to locate this gravesite. I couldn't quite understand the reticence of cemetery personnel to divulge its location, considering that Diamond has been dead for over 70 years, but such was the case. No printed guide I consulted was helpful (the most I learned was the name and borough of the cemetery he was buried in and the fact that the gravesite was unmarked). I contacted the cemetery office, I talked to gravediggers in the cemetery, and was ready to give up completely when, in desperation and without any expectation of success, I went onto a "Find a Grave" forum and spelled out the frustrating experience I had been through. Mr. Wilson responded and within a day's time, using Mr. Wilson's information and contemporary photos of Diamond's funeral, I was able to locate the exact spot of his final "Resting Place." For those with an interest in this subject, Mr. Wilson's book is indispensable. His biographical descriptions are concise and accurate and one would be hard put to think of anyone deceased, famous or infamous, who is not included in this book. Actors, writers, criminals, politicians, athletes, politicians, scientists, artists- they're all here. The price may be steep, but, speaking for myself, it was well worth the investment.

Resting Places! Great Book!
This is Great book! I have been using it for a year now!

Only The Best
This is the best purchase I have made in the past year. In spite of what seems like a hefty price tag, it is worth every penny.
Scott Wilson, through a large number of reputable contributors, has assembled a comprehensive list of the burial places of virtually every celebrity/historical figure that I can think of. In addition to providing burial locations, Mr. Wilson also provides information regarding the deceased person's claim to fame, cause of death, and anecdotal stories pertaining to his individual subject, as well as dates of birth and death.
While the book claims to provide over 7,000 "resting places", in actuality far more grave locations are provided as in many cases Mr. Wilson provides locations for prominent families on the basis of a prominent family member's name or a historial event such as Titanic victims.
In the four months since I have had this book, I have only come up with two or three people who are not listed in this book.
This book is essential to anyone who likes to visit cemeteries or as they say 'get within six feet of your favorite dead celeb'.

Philokalia
Published in Paperback by Zoo Press (March, 2002)

Subtitle: new & selected poems
This collection includes selected poems from The Theology of Doubt (1985), The Translation of Babel (1990), Figures for the Ghost (1994) and Recovered Body (1998). The last, Recovered Body, is the only one of these that I have read. If the selection from it is representative, a significant portion of memorable poems has been excluded for this collection. The strongest poems in Recovered Body, "The Recovered Midrashim of Rabbi Sab" in included in part - this group of poems are insightful and unusual takes on scriptural stories.

From The Translation of Babel comes an excellent string of poems "The Translation of Raimundo Luz" which in a series of related poems ("My Infancy", "My Personal History", "My Language", "My Moral Dream", "My Imitation", "Our Lost Angels" ...) manages to explicate liberation theology in the best poetic, "post-modern" sense through the confounding of the life/personality of Raimundo Luz and Christ. From the same book comes a delightful homage to Calvino "Lost Cities: Calvino" and a wonderfully sassy "Lucifer's Epistle to the Fallen" with delightful lines: "Him! Showboat with the Heavy Thumbs! Pretender / at Creation! Maker of Possibilities!" combined with insightful images: "Imagine! The ignorance you're dressed in! / The way you wear it! ..."

In the new poems severals of the "Adventures in New Testament Greek" stand out as serious, playful analysis of key Biblical terms: Metanoia, Haireis, Nous, Mysterion ...

While the collection will appeal especially to those with an interest in religious poetry, this collection is solid poetry - worth consideration simply as excellent poetry.

Scott Cairns is an inspiration
I took a literature class with Scott Cairns, and (I have to be honest) he is absolutely enchanting. I've never heard a man read poetry quite like he can--drawing out meanings without imposing his "self" upon the words. I was so impressed by his teaching style that I began investigating his work, and I was enthralled all over again.

Philokalia is a exploration of the spiritual, but it's also incredibly grounded; Cairns never loses sight of the ~body~ (and yes, sometimes "it hurts to see"). I think that tomorrow's literature classes will be citing Cairns as one of the most profound poets of this time period.

Scott's work has been (and I most sincerely hope) will continue to be an inspiration for me.

Unique and ongoing project in poetics/theology
The early poems are charming enough, but something absolutely uncanny happens as you chart the course from the second book (Translation of Babel) through the new poems section--an unusual (I'd say unique) poetic enterprise that opens up the possibility of the transcendent, but not a disembodied transcendent, rather a sense of the Holy made manifest in matter, matter that is lovingly attended.

Recovered Body

Poetry written from a theological perspective -- it works
As I began this volume, I prepared myself to be disappointed. The first section "Deep Below Our Violences" consists of poems that are well written with an interesting mix of topics and forms. However, they say little about the world and humanity that is not common poetic parlance. "Alexandrian Fragments" uses the burning of the library in Alexandria as its primary image; "Archaeology: A Subsequent Lecture" uses a dig; "Interval with Erato" a sensual/sexual encounter with the muse ...

The second section "The Recovered Midrashim of Rabbi Sab", in contrast, shows a very inventive poet writing distinctive, meaningful prose poems. "YHWH's Image" presents an image of Time which pauses, twitches its tail, opens it's eyes while God creates creates humanity in his own image, a precise image molded in clay on God's body. "The Turning of Lot's Wife" shows the wife as the compassionate one: "... she could not turn her back on even one doomed child of the city, but must turn her back instead upon the saved." "In the Well of Joseph's Brief Despair" presents the view of the world from the bottom of the well - and its continuing effect on Joseph after his life was spared.

The final section "Supplications" presents two strong themes - Hebrew vs. Greek thought patterns and the value of body. The topics supporting these themes include religious stylites (monks living on small, high platforms, the harrowing of hell, the death of the crucified man headed for paradise, Mary Magdalen ... in these poems the same formal strengths appear that appear in the first section. However, here Cairns more frequently has something uncommon to say.

Troubling revisions of Christian myth
I'm no convert, but I must say the charm and candor of these poems (not to mention the music and craft of the poems themselves) have me rethinking some of my knee-jerk dismissal of that old story. I'd heard he was a CHRISTIAN poet, but I didn't know he was also a POET. Amazing work.

Wow! Mystery gets a Body!
Erotic, holy, erudite, and deeply moving! I love how Cairns engages both metaphysical mystery and sensual materiality in a single amazing moment, in a single turn of phrase--as in "Loves" when Magdalen observes "All loves are bodily, require that the lips part, and press their trace of secrecy upon the one beloved." I'd say the visionary has returned to American poetry.

Mr.Kierland takes us under the skin of complex characters
We take an intense and magical trip with them to the end of their wildest dreams, to a world of of Cadillacs and country music, violence and inevitable celebrity. A remarkable experience.

Modern day bonnie and clyde with contemporary substance
A fast moving story seemingly like many of today's stories (e.g. movies like Fargo, Thelma and Louise, Bonnia and Clyde, Pulp Fiction) but with its own unique flavor, perspectives and depth. Just waiting for screen action by the Coen brothers or Tarantino! A good read.

RUNDOWN THE WIND cuts right to the American marrow.
RUNDOWN THE WIND cuts right to the American marrow. Fast food, fast cars, and fast sex, all wrapped up in characters you'll never forget. Lookout for this one!

The Scandinavian Look: Country by Design
Published in Hardcover by Todtri Productions Ltd (November, 2001)
Authors: Mary Seehafer Sears, Keith Scott Morton, and Stephen Brook
Average review score:

An American Take on the Swedish Style Home
This is an excellent pictoral review of a lovely home recently built in the Wisconsin countryside. The book is full of great ideas for both interior and especially exterior architectural details. As an interior and architectural designer, I have stolen ideas extensively for a Scandinavian style home I am working on which is currently under construction. The house featured in the book is beautifully done, but not for those seeking a subtle take on the Swedish/Scandinavian home. Disneyesque could aptly describe the overall look and feel of the home. This is not to say it does not have a great charm, but it slams its design concepts home with no punches pulled. It is an American interpretation and distillation of Scandinavia.
There are a lot of great ideas for color and design for the built interiors, but I found the interior furnishings and accessories to be ameteurish and do not live up to the professional standard of the architecture that contains it. The furnishings are rather middle of the road contemporary country style and do not suit the carefully orchestrated design concepts of the architectural designer. For instance the sofas are large and clunky, and are upholstered in a bland fabric - none of which would ever been found in a house of this type of traditional Swedish home.
With that caveat I highly recommend the book to those who admire the Scandinavian style and especially to anyone planning to design and build a home in this style.

Scandinavian Interior Design
As a folk artist, I am interested in European interior design. My interest in Swedish design lies in the magnificient use of color. This book provided what I needed.

Dream home down to every detail
I'm fascinated with Carl Larsson's home, and have long wished to recreate that same feel in a modern home. Not being an architect or interior designer, I find it hard though to translate the essence of Carl Larsson and charming old-world Scandinavian design into modern details. This book shows it all. The magnificent home featured is packed with charm without being gaudy. It's also packed with ingeniously creative solutions to practical needs. Full of color photos, it's eye-candy worthy of coffee-table display, and yet is practical enough to be a workbook during the planning stage of a building/remodeling project. It's now my "Dream Home Bible".
